Bộ phim lấy bối cảnh của cuộc chiến Trung - Nhật năm 1937. Khi đó, quân đội của Đế quốc Nhật vừa chiếm được thủ đô của nước cộng hòa Trung Hoa là Nam Kinh. Sau đợt chiếm đóng đó, lính Nhật đã tiến hành cuộc tàn sát lớn. Chúng giết chóc, cưỡng hiếp phụ nữ. Chỉ trong vài tuần hàng ngàn lính Trung Quốc và dân thường bị giết.
