Từ The Godfather, P.I & P.II (1972, 1974), Casablanca (1942), King Kong (1933), Star Wars (1977) đến The Lord of the Rings (2001-03), Pulp Fiction (1994), City of God (2002), Finding Nemo (2003)... những bộ phim đại diện cho những thể loại, những thế hệ khác nhau đều góp mặt trong danh sách này. Chỉ cần nhìn vào 100 cái tên góp mặt trong cuộc bình chọn những bộ phim hay nhất mọi thời đại cũng đủ để thấy sức nặng của Time.

 Ngoài 100 phim hay nhất mọi thời đại, Time còn công bố danh sách 10 phim tiêu biểu nhất cho mỗi thập kỷ kể từ khi tạp chí ra đời. Đó là: Metropolis (1927), Dodsworth (1936), Citizen Kane (1941), Ikiru (1952), Persona (1966), Chinatown (1974), Decalogue (1988), Pulp Fiction (1994) và Talk to Her (2002).

Đó là Chinatown, một bộ phim được đánh giá là "hoàn hảo" được sản xuất năm 1974. Casablanca, bộ phim hay nhất thập kỷ 1940, một trong những tác phẩm điện ảnh hay nhất thế kỷ 20, không có bộ phim nào xứng đáng hơn Casablanca được xếp vào danh sách 100 phim hay nhất mọi thời đại. Có thể Clint Eastwood vượt mặt Martin Scorsese tại Oscar 2005 nhưng lần này "cha đẻ" của chàng "Phi công" (The Aviator) lại đứng lên bục cao nhất dành cho một đạo diễn khi ông có tới 3 bộ phim được Time đánh giá là hay nhất mọi thời đại trong đó đáng chú ý có Taxi Driver (1976) và Goodfellas (1990). Trong khi đó, huyền thoại Robert De Niro đứng đầu danh sách các diễn viên có phim lọt vào top 100 phim hay nhất mọi thời đại của Time với 5 vai diễn mà tiêu biểu là trong The Godfather P. II (1974), Taxi Driver (1976), Brazil (1985)...
Cảnh trong "Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith".

Mặc dù Marlon Brando đã qua đời nhưng tên tuổi của ông vẫn được cả thế giới nhắc đến với vai diễn "Bố già" (The Godfather) để đời. Dưới bàn tay tài hoa của đạo diễn Francis Ford Coppola và diễn xuất hoàn hảo của Marlon Brando, Al Pacino... The Godfather vẫn luôn được coi là chuẩn mực của phim gangster thế giới cho dù ra lò từ những năm 1970. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1966) của đạo diễn Sergio Leone cũng được coi là niềm tự hào của điện ảnh thế giới. Đây cũng là bộ phim ghi dấu ấn của Clint Eastwood, nam diễn viên gạo cội vừa đăng quang tại Oscar 2005 với tư cách là Đạo diễn xuất sắc nhất. Có lẽ không cần bàn luận quá nhiều về King Kong (1933), Star Wars (1977) và series phim sử thi The Lord of the Rings (2001-03) từng làm mưa làm gió trong những giai đoạn khác nhau như là những "người khổng lồ" của điện ảnh đương thời. Chúa nhẫn 3 thì thống trị cả Oscar 2004 với tổng doanh thu 3 phần lên tới 5 tỉ USD.

Trong khi đó Star Wars vẫn vươn xa sức ảnh hưởng của mình suốt 3 thập kỷ. Star Wars ra mắt năm 1977, 28 năm sau, tháng 5/2005, phần cuối Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith đang khống chế các rạp trên toàn thế giới với 158.5 triệu USD sau 3 ngày công chiếu riêng tại thị trường Bắc Mỹ. Còn King Kong, nó là bộ phim mở màn, là chuẩn mực của phim kinh dị giả tưởng. Chinatown (1974) của đạo diễn "Nghệ sĩ dương cầm" Roman Polanski với diễn xuất ấn tượng của Jack Nicholson cũng góp mặt trong top 100. It"s A Wonderful Life (1946) từng được đánh giá là một trong những phim hay nhất mọi thời đại tiếp tục lọt vào mắt xanh của các nhà báo kỳ cựu trong lĩnh vực điện ảnh của tạp chí Time. Thập niên 90 cũng có rất nhiều bộ phim xuất sắc. Cái tên cần nhắc đến đầu tiên là Schindler"s List (1993), bộ phim dựa trên câu chuyện có thật trong Thế chiến II, về số phận của những người dân Do Thái và cuộc thảm sát của Phát xít Đức.

Schindler"s List là một trong những bộ phim thành công nhất của đạo diễn Steven Spielberg. Một năm sau Schindler"s List, Pulp Fiction ra đời. Nó không chỉ được đánh giá là một trong những bộ phim hay nhất thập niên 90 mà còn là tiến thêm một bậc cao hơn nhiều, một trong những siêu phẩm hay nhất mọi thời đại. Bộ phim đậm chất gangster này đã mang tới danh tiếng cho đạo diễn Quentin Tarantino và nữ diễn viên Uma Thurman, cặp bài trùng sau này kết hợp rất ăn ý trong Kill Bill Vol 1 & 2 . Cuối cùng không thể quên Finding Nemo, bộ phim hoạt hình hiếm hoi sản xuất năm 2003.

7. Barry Lyndon [1975] DVDRip



In 1975 the world was at Stanley Kubrick's feet. His films Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and A Clockwork Orange, released in the previous dozen years, had provoked rapture and consternation--not merely in the film community, but in the culture at large. On the basis of that smashing hat trick, Kubrick was almost certainly the most famous film director of his generation, and absolutely the one most likely to rewire the collective mind of the movie audience. And what did this radical, at-least-20-years-ahead-of-his-time filmmaker give the world in 1975? A stately, three-hour costume drama based on an obscure Thackeray novel from 1844. A picaresque story about an Irish lad (Ryan O'Neal, then a major star) who climbs his way into high society, Barry Lyndon bewildered some critics (Pauline Kael called it "an ice-pack of a movie") and did only middling business with patient audiences. The film was clearly a technical advance, with its unique camerawork (incorporating the use of prototype Zeiss lenses capable of filming by actual candlelight) and sumptuous production design. But its hero is a distinctly underwhelming, even unsympathetic fellow, and Kubrick does not try to engage the audience's emotions in anything like the usual way.

Why, then, is Barry Lyndon a masterpiece? Because it uncannily captures the shape and rhythm of a human life in a way few other films have; because Kubrick's command of design and landscape is never decorative but always apiece with his hero's journey; and because every last detail counts. Even the film's chilly style is thawed by the warm narration of the great English actor Michael Hordern and the Irish songs of the Chieftains. Poor Barry's life doesn't matter much in the end, yet the care Kubrick brings to the telling of it is perhaps the director's most compassionate gesture toward that most peculiar species of animal called man. And the final, wry title card provides the perfect Kubrickian sendoff--a sentiment that is even more poignant since Kubrick's premature death.
