Bởi thế, bản expansion này sẽ là sự kết hợp của cả 2 thương hiệu chiến thuật khổng lồ và trở thành trò chơi 'cách mạng' về gameplay trong cả series. 3 nền văn minh mới được giới thiệu trong game là Trung Hoa, Nhật Bản và Ấn Độ. Mỗi quốc gia này sẽ trải qua phần chiến dịch 5 chương riêng biệt, trải qua nhiều giai đoạn khác nhau trong sử sách. Rất nhiều bản map mới xuất hiện, che phủ cả Con đường tơ lụa nối liền Trung Quốc với đế chế La Mã châu Âu, đảo Borneo ở Đông Nam Á mang đậm dấu chân khai phá của người Ấn, vùng Siberia lạnh giá ở phía Bắc lục địa vàng... Người chơi tất nhiên có thể chọn lấy 1 trong 3 quốc gia nói trên để chơi và chiến đấu với những nền văn minh khác trong Age of Empires III ở bất cứ bản đồ nào mình muốn. Nếu sở hữu cả bản mở rộng WarChiefs, bạn cũng có thể đối đầu với các đất nước và bộ lạc trong đó. Việc chưa bao giờ chạm tay vào game cho phép Big Huge Games tha hồ sáng tạo gameplay, và kết quả là rất nhiều quyết định khác được đưa vào từng level. Ví dụ, rất nhiều game thủ Đế chế III đã biết đến hệ thống thẻ được dụng để mang đến vùng đất của bạn những viện binh từ quê nhà. Lá thẻ đầu tiên thường được người chơi dùng để yêu cầu có thêm 2 hay 3 nông dân khai hoang bởi lớp nhân vật này là xương sống của nền kinh tế. Khi bạn bắt đầu cuộc chạy đua khai thác tài nguyên và xây dựng công trình, càng có nhiều nông dân, bạn càng có lợi. Tuy nhiên, Trung Hoa sẽ khiến bạn phải nghĩ lại về hướng đầu tư cho 'lá thẻ' ban đầu này bởi khác với các nền văn minh còn lại, người Trung Quốc không tính dân số bằng 'nhà' mà tính bằng 'làng', mỗi làng có thể chứa đến 20 người và có nhiều lợi ích khác (như có thể nuôi thú chẳng hạn). Game thủ sử dụng lực lượng này sẽ muốn xây càng nhiều làng càng tốt trước khi dùng thẻ để tăng tối đa lợi nhuận. Hầu hết các thẻ 'quê nhà' trong Asian Dynasties đều được dùng 2 lần, nên người chơi có thể 'đẻ' được dân số lớn chỉ trong một thời gian ngắn. Big Huge Games cũng đã đưa Wonder trở lại gameplay. Trong Age of Empires và Age of Empires II, bạn có thể xây dựng Wonder của thế giới, vốn là những công trình khổng lồ có khả năng gây ra những tác động đặc biệt. Tuy nhiên, những tòa nhà này đã biến mất ở Age of Empires III. Với The Asian Dynasties, để có thể tiến lên một thời kỳ tiếp theo, bạn phải xây được một Wonder không chỉ có thể cấp thêm quân mà còn đem đến những phần thưởng đặc biệt. Ví dụ, Wonder Phật Tổ có sức mạnh quảng nhãn, cho bạn tạm thời nhìn thấy công trình và quân đội của kẻ thù trên bản đồ. Vấn đề nằm ở chỗ, mỗi nền văn minh phương Đông có 5 Wonder khác nhau, nhưng trong cả trò chơi, bạn lại chỉ có thể nâng cấp 4 lần. Do đó, bạn phải chọn lựa xem nên loại bỏ kỳ quan nào. Đây có thể là một quyết định khó khăn bởi mỗi Wonder đều có những khả năng hữu dụng riêng. Xuất khẩu cũng là ý tưởng mới trong bản mở rộng. Về cơ bản, xuất khẩu là cách bạn có được nguồn tài nguyên thứ 3, được điều hành bởi chính các nông dân. Bạn có thể tăng tỷ lệ xuất hàng từ 5 lên 10 % tổng số tài nguyên khai thác được để tăng tích lũy. Tuy nhiên, việc này có thể cũng sẽ làm ảnh hưởng đến quá trình phát triển kinh tế của quốc gia bạn sở hữu. May mắn là trong nhiều trường hợp, bạn có thể xuất khẩu liên kết với các đại sứ quán để đổi lấy quân đội và vũ khí từ các cường quốc châu Âu đồng minh với mình. Ví dụ, game thủ có thể mang về một nhóm quân Hà Lan và cannon để củng cố cho lực lượng lính Nhật của mình. Một điều thú vị nữa là ngay cả khi dân số của bạn đã gần Max, bạn vẫn có thể mua thêm lính nước ngoài. Mỗi nền văn minh trong game được chơi rất khác nhau, và khác cả so với những quốc gia ở bản Age of Empires III gốc. Trong khi Nhật Bản không xây nhà mà xây đền thờ để tạo ra thức ăn từ thiên nhiên, rải rác đền thờ khắp nơi thay vì tựu chung tại một chỗ, thì Ấn Độ lại chủ yếu phát triển một nền kinh tế lệ thuộc vào gỗ.
